Rules & Guidelines

  • The Rules and Guidelines have changed from last year.
    Review the information regarding participation carefully.

    • Challenge is open to students in grades 3-12 (U.S. citizens and legal residents of U.S. States and U.S. Territories only).
    • One group submission per Glog (group submissions count as a single entry).
    • Only the registered student(s) may participate.
    • Individuals may participate simultaneously in both a group and an individual submission as long as the submissions are distinct and separate.
    • Grades 9-12 Glogs must be submitted by 11:59 PM EST on February 10, 2017. Grades 3-8 must submit their Glogs by 11:59 PM EST on March 13, 2017.

    Group submissions may not exceed 4 students however individuals may also work alone. Each group member must register individually. There are no exceptions.

    • The participant(s) is responsible for ensuring that all appropriate legal documentation (e.g. indemnification, license to reproduce, etc.) has been submitted to PRIVO.com prior to public voting.
    • NASA Innovative Technology Partnerships Office (ITPO) employees and contractors, contest judges, NASA Goddard’s innovators involved in the selected spinoff stories, and immediate family members of any of these individuals are prohibited from participation in the development of contest submissions.
    • Video submissions may be no longer than 3 minutes in length.
    • Glogs must be submitted to the grade level category of the oldest member of the team.
    • Students may customize and change design of Glog template.
    • The Glog must clearly demonstrate an understanding of:
      • NASA Spinoff Technology;
      • NASA missions (high school level);
      • Commercial application associated with the respective Spinoff story; and
      • Potential commercial application(s) not already used in the public sector developed by students using the engineering design process provided. Students are encouraged to use their imagination(s).
    • Submissions must be the original creation of the student(s).
    • Third-party media may be utilized in submissions to a limited extent. Inclusion of such media should be solely supplemental in nature to the overall submission content. In the event third-party media is utilized, permission to utilize any copyrighted or trademarked material must be obtained prior to submitting to NASA. Failure to comply with this guideline may result in disqualification of the submission.
    • There are no budgetary constraints imposed on video submissions. However, the stated members of the group must perform all work associated with the video submission.
    • Do not include identifiable information (i.e. no actual name, no school name, location). If you are using a device that has geo-location services, please turn those services off before creating your video or photos.
    • Submissions must be appropriate for general audiences as defined by the Motion Picture Association. Submissions containing nudity, crude or profane language, or inappropriate gestures or pictures will be disqualified. NASA reserves the right to disqualify any video determined to be inappropriate.

    Returning student?
    Students who participated in the 2015-16 OPSPARC can sign in with their username and password (powered by PRIVO iD). Parents will not need to go through the verification process again, but must consent to their child’s participation.

    • All users must be registered with PRIVO prior to submitting their Glog.
    • Groups must identify a single group leader who will submit the Glog on the group’s behalf. However, all participant usernames must be listed on the Glog.
    • Glog must be tagged with:
      • Your username
      • Team member usernames
      • Your grade
      • #NASAOPSPARC2017
      • #NASASpinoff
